The Central Library’s McKim Building is one of Boston’s most treasured civic spaces, welcoming more than one million visitors each year. However, accessibility barriers and aging infrastructure mean that nearly 40 percent of this “palace for the people” is no longer accessible to the public. Now, with a philanthropic investment through the Boston Public Library Fund, the Library is in a comprehensive planning process to prepare the McKim Building for its next chapter.
Join us for the next Library People conversation with Beth Prindle, the BPL’s Director of Research & Special Collections, and Paula Sakey, Executive Director of the Boston Public Library Fund. Beth will share information from a recently completed yearlong study, shaped by input from scores of staff and stakeholders, that takes a holistic view of the entire Central Library to guide future improvements to McKim’s services, spaces, and collections. These findings have laid the foundation for a renovation that will transform the public’s experience of McKim for generations to come.
