This National Library Week we are celebrating all the ways the BPL sparks joy! So, we asked patrons and staff: What’s YOUR library joy?
Deandra Williams, PhD, Adult Programs Supervisor: “Knowing that patrons can become inspired by a famous author, political leader, or art performance.”
Leo Liu, BPLF Board Member and supporter: “The Central Library’s courtyard brings me joy. Such a beautiful and tranquil oasis in the heart of the city epitomizes how the BPL is not merely a repository of books, but a magnificent space for gathering and learning together!”eo.
Catherine Halpin, North End Branch Librarian: “The answer is always ‘People.’ I love getting to know my patrons, their interests, and their needs, and developing relationships that connect them to the Library and to others in the community.”
Lissah Johnson, patron and supporter: “I was never much of a reader as a kid, but in my adult life, it has become one of my greatest pleasures to pick up a new book from my local branch.”
Maggie Levine, Early Literacy Programs Librarian: “My library joy comes from knowing I’ve helped make the Library a space where young people know their worth and that people are invested in the outcome of their lives.”
Lou Damelin, patron and supporter: “During high school and freshman year of college, I would work in Boston after school and study at night in the McKim Building. The Library gave me a safe, quiet place to study and keep my grades up.”
René LaPointe Jameson, Emerging Leader: “What brings me Library joy is the intentional programming the BPL staff create that reflects the diversity of interests, needs, and cultures of our community members.”
