Learning English Through Song

Marisela Valero came to Boston from Venezuela in 2020. She quickly joined the Boston Public Library’s ESL Chorus and found that singing helped her feel connected to the city and to other English-language learners who love music and singing as much as she does.

She told us,  “We come from different countries, I come from Venezuela, there are colleagues from China, Japan, Guatemala, India, Iran, we speak many languages and have diverse cultural traditions, but during that hour of rehearsal with the Chorale, we speak a single universal language which is music, which unites us and gives us joy, before many challenges that we have to face.”

The generous support of donors ensures the BPL is able to provide innovative ESOL programs, like the Chorus, for patrons.
