Support the Boston Public Library’s Summer Reading Initiative

Every summer at the Boston Public Library, children, teens, and families "unearth" something new — a story, an idea, or a sense of what’s possible. Your donation helps provide access to educational resources and exciting programs that keep young minds engaged and learning all year long.

The Boston Public Library’s Summer Reading initiative helps children, teens, and families stay connected to books, creativity, and discovery when many young people are at risk of summer learning loss. This year’s theme, Unearthing a Story, draws on the spirit of discovery — digging deeper and uncovering something new — while reflecting the Library’s role in helping young readers uncover endless possibilities.

Through reading challenges, hands-on activities, and programs across the city, the Library creates meaningful opportunities for youth to explore, imagine, and keep learning all summer long. Thanks to an anonymous $25,000 match, every gift will be doubled to help expand access to Summer Reading and reach even more young readers this summer.

Last year at the Library:

2,497 Youth Program Attendees joined summer programs, in July and August, at the Boston Public Library, highlighting the strong demand for free, hands-on experiences that spark curiosity, support literacy, and make learning fun.

5,710 Summer Reading Participants took part in the Boston Public Library’s Summer Reading program through BINGO challenges and other opportunities for engagement, reflecting the broad reach of the initiative across the city.

402,718 Summer Checkouts were made during July and August, showing how the Library keeps children, teens, and families connected to books, learning, and discovery all summer long.
